 St. Paul's E-pistle

| September 8, 2016
This Sunday, September 11th 17th Sunday after Pentecost The grumbling of the Pharisees and the scribes in today's gospel is actually our holy hope: This Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them. That our God wills to seek and to save the lost is not only a holy hope, it is our only hope. As Paul's first letter to Timothy reminds us, "The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." Thanks be to God.
Holy Communion - 11 AM All are welcome to receive Communion!
Sunday's Readings: Exodus 32:7-14 Psalm 51:1-10 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Luke 15:1-10

HAPPENING IN THE COMMUNITY
Common Ground:
Throughout the months of August and September, Common Ground in Vallejo is conducting a survey to learn more about our community's specific concerns related to neighborhood and school safety. We are particularly asking adults responsible for school-aged children, as well as older students, to weigh in on their experience of safety in Vallejo. Most importantly, we will be organizing toward a community meeting on September 27th to begin discussing how to work together toward productive and practical solutions.
The survey is available online here: SURVEY
Vallejo Farmers Market Join in fellowship with the volunteers from Holy Trinity to staff a booth at the Vallejo Farmers Market. We are looking for volunteers from St. Paul's to help. Please sign up for a 2 hour time block to help in the booth and spread the word. See Kathy Sutin or Pr. Dawn if you have any questions or want more information.
Brown Bag Meal Ministry Remember the hungry on street corners and elsewhere by having a Brown Bag Meal handy in your car to offer these folks. The bags are available for pick-up at church, along with envelopes to donate the $4.00 it costs to fill a bag. The donation, however, is optional. Please record your name, the date, and number of bags you take. Give generously and joyfully!

John Chrysostom, Bishop of Constantinople, died 407 Tuesday, September 13, 2016 John was a priest in Antioch and an outstanding preacher. As a result, he was exiled by the empress. Holy Cross Day Wednesday, September 14, 2016 Helena, mother of Constantine, made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and found what may be the actual site of Jesus' crucifixion. Her son built two churches there, and the dedication of one of them gave rise to this celebration of our Lord's victory on the cross. Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, martyr, died around 258 Friday, September 16, 2016 Cyprian served as a bishop during a time of great persecution of Christians. He insisted on receiving back those who had left the faith under duress. He also provided medical care during a severe epidemic. Hildegard, Abbess of Bingen, died 1179 Saturday, September 17, 2016 A mystic who was widely influential within the church, Hildegard advised and reproved kings and popes, wrote poems and hymns, and produced treatises in medicine, theology, and natural history. She was also a musician and artist.
