Weekly e-pistle 10/01/15

October 1, 2015

This Sunday, October 4th

Holy Communion - 10 AM
All are welcome to receive Communion!
Today's gospel combines a saying that makes many of us uncomfortable with a story we find comforting. Jesus' saying on divorce is another of his rejections of human legislation in favor of the original intent of God's law. Jesus' rebuke of the disciples who are fending off the children should challenge us as well. What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God as a child does?

Sunday's readings:
Genesis 2:18-24; Hebrews 1:1-4, 2:5-12; Mark 10:2-16

Blessing of the Animals & Picnic Lunch at Noon
in commemoration of St. Francis of Assisi

Bring your beloved animal friend (or stuffed animal friend) for a blessing, and enjoy a hot dog lunch in our picnic area.

If your animal friend cannot be present, bring a photo - or simply tell us about your friend.

We also offer prayer in remembrance of animal friends who have died.

Dogs must be on leashes, please.

Cats and other animals must be in appropriate containers.

Blessing of the Quilts & School Kits on Sunday: Many have labored over many months to create beautiful quilts to warm those who have suffered disasters, and the people of St. Paul's have contributed generously to create school kits. We will bless those items on Sunday before they are taken to the Women of the ELCA Ingathering next week for deliver to Lutheran World Relief. Come help bless our gifts. Be a blessing!

I Was Hungry, I was Thirsty, I was in Prison and ... Learn how faith and justice are intertwined in a hungry world!
This educational workshop by the Sierra Pacific Synod Hunger Network explores both the life-saving work of the ELCA Hunger Appeal, and how reforming mass incarceration policies and practices is crucial to ending hunger and poverty in this country. If there is an interest, a parallel children's program will be offered. Keynote speakers: Dr. Ryan Cumming, Hunger Education Director of the ELCA World Hunger Appeal; Laura Magnani, Director of American Friends Service Committee's Bay Area Healing Justice Program in California and coauthor of the AFSC publication, "Beyond Prisons: A New Interfaith Paradigm for Our Failed Prison System."
 WHEN: Saturday, October 24, 2015, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
WHERE: Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, Davis, CA
