This Sunday, July 12th

Holy Communion - 10 AM -
All are welcome to receive Communion!

When Amos told what he saw when God held up the plumb line of justice next to Israel-that the poor were being trampled-he was a threat to the power of priests and king. John the Baptist also spoke truth to power, and Herod had him beheaded. In Herod's fear that Jesus is John returned from the dead, we may hear hope for the oppressed: that all the prophets killed through the ages are alive in Jesus. We are called to witness to justice in company with them.

At our presiding bishop's request, we will continue to pray throughout the summer for an end to racism.

Book Study - 9 AM -

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in an Age of Colorblindness

Vacation Bible School, Monday July 20th - Friday July 24. Monday - Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to noon. Ages 5-12, Cost: $35 (Scholarship are available!) Led by MT. Cross Day Camp.

A special offering will be taken this Sunday, July 12th, for the Rebuild the Churches fund. Since last month's racially-based shootings in Charleston, SC, four African American congregations' church buildings have been burned down by arsonists. Congregations across the country have joined together to raise money to help rebuild those church buildings. If you cannot be in church on Sunday, July 12th, you may mail it to the church office,1300 Tuolumne St, Vallejo, CA 94590. Be sure to put Rebuilding the Churches in the memo line so that your offering does not go to the general fund!

Martha Circle will meet Thursday, July 16th, at noon.

Dismantling Racism: An Introductory Workshop sponsored by our synod will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church - Auburn on Saturday, July 25, 2015 from10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. All are encouraged to attend!

I Was Hungry, I was Thirsty, I was in Prison and ... Learn how faith and justice are intertwined in a hungry world!  This educational workshop by the Sierra Pacific Synod Hunger Network explores both the life-saving work of the ELCA Hunger Appeal, and how reforming mass incarceration policies and practices is crucial to ending hunger and poverty in this country. If there is an interest, a parallel children's program will be offered. Keynote speakers: Dr. Ryan Cumming, Hunger Education Director of the ELCA World Hunger Appeal; Laura Magnani, Director of American Friends Service Committee's Bay Area Healing Justice Program in California and coauthor of the AFSC publication, "Beyond Prisons: A New Interfaith Paradigm for Our Failed Prison System."

Call Committee Update

Our meeting went very well Wednesday night, with all members present. Our consultation with Pr. Katy Grindberg was excellent, and Pr. Carlton Monroe was there learning about the process, as he is new on synod staff. We gained a deeper understanding of the process and our responsibilities, and some very useful resource information. Every committee member accepted an assignment to begin work on the Ministry Site Profile. We will be gathering and compiling information already available from our past year's process and investigating ways to involve the congregation in additional process. Our next meeting is July 29, 7 pm, at my house.
