May 7, 2015

This Sunday, May 10th

Sixth Sunday of Easter

Holy Communion - 10 AM - All are welcome to receive Communion!

This Sunday's image of the life the risen Christ shares with us is the image of friendship. We are called to serve others as Jesus came to serve; but for John's gospel, the image of servanthood is too hierarchical, too distant, to capture the essence of life with Christ. Friendship captures the love, the joy, the deep mutuality of the relationship into which Christ invites us. The Greeks believed that true friends are willing to die for each other. This is the mutual love of Christian community commanded by Christ and enabled by the Spirit.

Sunday school for children - 9 AM

Sunday's readings:

Acts 10:44-48, Psalm 98, 1 John 5:1-6, John 15:9-17

A Message from Bev Smith on Behalf of the Worship Committee
Please read!

In an attempt to have communion before 11:00 a.m., the worship committee is "experimenting" with a few changes in the worship service. It is understandable that kids can only sit still so long, and we hope to shorten the service so those who have to leave will be able to receive communion. We are requesting your help with the following changes:
  • Beginning this Sunday, May 10th, we will move the announcements to the end of the service, before the blessing. In order to make announcements that all can hear, we ask that, if you have an announcement to make, you please sit in the front pew after receiving communion. This will have you up front, where your voice will be easier to be heard, and we will not have to wait for you to walk to the front.
  • We also are going to experiment with shortening the time it takes for the Sharing of the Peace. For a few Sundays, let's try just saying "Peace Be With You," a short hug if you want, and move on to the next person. There have been conversations that span over several minutes, and when that happens with each person you share the peace with, the aisle is blocked and the Sharing of the Peace can take 10 minutes or more. Those longer conversations can be held downstairs during coffee hour.
In addition, the Creed will not be included except on baptismal festivals, or when new members are received. The creed was a late addition to the liturgy, and the creedal elements are included in the Great Thanksgiving. The Creed is not a required element of the liturgy.

Let's try these experimental changes for a while and see how it goes.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Other Happenings:

Spring Congregation Meeting May 17th immediately following worship: At our spring meeting, we will elect council members and a call committee. Please pray about how God may be calling you to serve during this time of transition.

Acolyte Training Sunday following worship Worship: Kim Hervey will lead a training for acolytes.

Council Meeting following worship: The council will hold its regular meeting following worship on Sunday. Members are invited and encouraged to attend as visitors. Members may speak about their concerns at the designated time, but do not join in council deliberation or voting.

Cookies Needed for Synod Assembly: Each congregation is asked to provide several dozen nutritious cookies for the synod assembly's hospitality room. Please put your cookies in containers you will not need back, and leave them in the kitchen by Thursday, May 28th. Pr. Pamela and Craig Pyle will attend this year's synod assembly as voting members. Dave Pond and Vicki Pyle will accompany them as visitors. (Please note that many pastors consider chocolate to be an essential nutrient. It provides endorphins to help people stay calm and centered during heated debate.)

Finance Workshops: Mark your calendars and plan to participate! In order to create a budget that best reflects the mission and values of the congregation, the finance team will lead a series of short workshops after worship on May 24th, May 31st, June 7th and June 14th. No decisions will be made at these workshops; rather, the finance team will gather information through these short workshops. We value your participation. Please come!
