In Isaiah it is the one God who sits above the earth and numbers the stars-it is that God who strengthens the powerless. So in Jesus' healing work we see the hand of the creator God, lifting up the sick woman to health and service (diakonia). Like Simon's mother-in-law, we are lifted up to health and diakonia. Following Jesus, we strengthen the powerless; like Jesus, we seek to renew our own strength in quiet times of prayer. Sunday's readings: |

| Change the Game and Tackle Hunger More than 28 years ago. The Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group:
"Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat."
Since that day, more than $135 million dollars has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Big Game into the nation's largest celebration of giving and serving.
Through this mission, young people learn what it's like to make a positive difference in the world as they collect food, raise funds, and volunteer to work in charities providing shelter to the homeless, food to the hungry, and compassion to those in need.
This Sunday, February 4, will be our regular Food Basket Sunday where we bring food donations for The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano County. This Sunday is a Souper Bowl of Caring/Food Basket Sunday. Bring your food donations, maybe even including cans of soup, and your $$$ to donate to the Souper Bowl of Caring. The Pyles will be accepting your monetary donations at the back of the church after the service to help feed the hungry in our community through the Souper Bowl of Caring.

| Woman's March Followup "A group of 8 women, three from Holy Trinity, three from St. Paul's plus three friends of members participated in the Women's March in Napa this past Saturday. It was a very positive and inspiring experience for all of us. The turnout was impressive, with an estimate of 4,000 per The Times Herald, which included many families and an impressive number of men supporters. We all felt this was worthwhile and important way of promoting what we and so many believe in, which includes working for justice and equal opportunity, while embracing compassion and kindness." - Karen Spears

| First Quarter Congregation Meeting/Reports Due Saint Paul's first Quarter Congregational meeting will be February 11th after church service at Saint Paul's. Please send your Annual Reports to Kathy Campas-Sutin no later than January 28th. You may email them to the church or drop them off at the office.

| Opportunities for Study There will be no study this Sunday February 4, as we have completed The Cross in Our Context. On February 11 we will be begin to look at the Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice. This is a process statement and feedback from both women and men is sought. You can take a look at the statement at womenandjustice@elca.org. This should be an interesting and challenging discussion for us to engage in. We will meet downstairs at Saint Paul's at 8:45 AM.
Martha Circle, women's Bible Study using "Gather" magazine meets the third Thursday of each month in Fellowship Hall at St. Paul's. Bring your own bag lunch and dessert will be served by the monthly hostess.

Food Basket Sunday. The first Sunday of each month at St. Paul's. Food donations go to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties. Brown Bag Lunches for distribution to the homeless are located in Fellowship Hall. Sewing Ministry: The 1st Thursday of every month in Fellowship Hall from 1 to 4 pm. Both women and men are welcome. No prior sewing experience is required. |

Remember to be patient while waiting for a response as most council members hold full time jobs and volunteer their free time to the church. They will get back to you as soon as possible. You are also welcome to attend council meetings with the exception of occasional closed executive sessions dealing with such things as personnel matters. If you wish to get something on the council agenda for a regular council meeting, contact Keith Domingo. If you wish to view council minutes, they are on file in the office. Any council member can help you access these. Remember if you are viewing minutes, they do not become final and official until approved at the next meeting.

The ELCA strongly suggests that all congregations have a mutual ministry committee comprised of the pastor and members of the congregation. There are many models for this group, and the model chosen for St. Paul's is a pastor-driven committee. This committee is there to discuss concerns, joys, and struggles from the congregation as well as any questions the pastor has. It is also a place for new ideas to be tested, as the committee members listen for comments being made by others. There is always a preference to bring any concerns directly to the pastor, but if that is not possible, these are the people to bring them to. At this time, the committee members are Karen Spears and Judy Faye. |

Please Note: If you wish to add new prayer requests please contact Judy Faye at judithfaye@aol.com, or (707) 980-9667 or (707) 557-4531. When submitting new names, be sure to use an identifier such as friend of Karen Spears or daughter of Jessica Nelson. Also briefly tell us the reason you are requesting prayers such as recent surgery so people will know what to pray for. If you see names on the list that it is time to remove, your own, or an old submission please let Judy know. With the exception of the Long Term Category, Council has recommended that names will be placed on the list for one month and then removed unless a new request with an update is submitted. If a name disappears that you want to stay in, just contact Judy with the reason you are requesting continuing prayer and she will add it back.
