Stories of the call to discipleship continue as the Time after Epiphany plays out the implications of our baptismal calling to show Christ to the world. Jesus begins proclaiming the good news and calling people to repentance right after John the Baptist is arrested for preaching in a similar way. Knowing that John was later executed, we see at the very outset the cost of discipleship. Still, the two sets of fisherman brothers leave everything they have known and worked for all their lives to follow Jesus and fish for people. Sunday's readings: |

| Martha Circle Bible Study from Gather Magazine This January through April, Mark Allan Powell will present a four-part series, "Multiple meanings: Learning from other interpretations," about how God speaks to us in unique and different ways through Scripture. The first lesson in the series will be led by Jan Jackson this Thursday, January 18, 12 Noon to 2 PM, downstairs at Saint Paul's. New women are always welcome. Pack a bag lunch and join in our time of community and study. |
| Women's March 2018 A group of women from Saint Paul's and Holy Trinity will be participating in the Women's March this Saturday, January 20, carpooling to the Napa site location. They will meet in the Saint Paul's parking lot at 8:45 AM and leave for Napa at 9:00 AM sharp. The purpose of the March is to spread the much needed message of love, hope and solidarity. The theme this year is "Power to the Polls". There will be a poster making session downstairs at Saint Paul's beginning at 2 PM (no more than two hours) on Friday the 19, to prepare for the March. Even if you are not marching, you might want to help make posters or simply call or text your ideas to Karen Spears, March organizer. It is suggested that poster paper be flexible not stiff board so it can be rolled up for transport and you won't fly away if it is a windy day. If you have markers, bring them along as well but we do have some at Saint Paul's.
It is not too late to join the March. Just call Karen either at her home phone: 707-644-2985 or Cell: 707-299-9895. Karen says, "We are looking for this March to be a positive one as was the case at the first one a year ago. Trump disinvites, we invite and welcome." So as you think about slogans for posters, keep them short and positive. It should be noted that there were men who marched last year in solidarity with the women. If there are men that want to join us, you are welcome.

| First Quarter Congregation Meeting/Reports Due Saint Paul's first Quarter Congregational meeting will be February 11th after church service at Saint Paul's. Please send your Annual Reports to Kathy Campas-Sutin no later than January 28th. You may email them to the church or drop them off at the office.

| Opportunities for Study Book Study: The Cross in Our Context: Jesus and the Suffering World by Douglas John Hall. The study will meet downstairs at Holy Trinity at 8 AM. Book can be ordered on-line.
Martha Circle, women's Bible Study using "Gather" magazine meets the third Thursday of each month in Fellowship Hall at St. Paul's. Bring your own bag lunch and dessert will be served by the monthly hostess.

| Opportunities for Service Joint choir practice will meet upstairs at Holy Trinity at 8:45 AM under the direction of Dean Ahlberg. New singers are always welcome.
Food Basket Sunday. The first Sunday of each month at St. Paul's. Food donations go to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties. Brown Bag Lunches for distribution to the homeless are located in Fellowship Hall. Sewing Ministry: The 1st Thursday of every month in Fellowship Hall from 1 to 4 pm. Both women and men are welcome. No prior sewing experience is required. |

Remember to be patient while waiting for a response as most council members hold full time jobs and volunteer their free time to the church. They will get back to you as soon as possible. You are also welcome to attend council meetings with the exception of occasional closed executive sessions dealing with such things as personnel matters. If you wish to get something on the council agenda for a regular council meeting, contact Keith Domingo. If you wish to view council minutes, they are on file in the office. Any council member can help you access these. Remember if you are viewing minutes, they do not become final and official until approved at the next meeting.

The ELCA strongly suggests that all congregations have a mutual ministry committee comprised of the pastor and members of the congregation. There are many models for this group, and the model chosen for St. Paul's is a pastor-driven committee. This committee is there to discuss concerns, joys, and struggles from the congregation as well as any questions the pastor has. It is also a place for new ideas to be tested, as the committee members listen for comments being made by others. There is always a preference to bring any concerns directly to the pastor, but if that is not possible, these are the people to bring them to. At this time, the committee members are Karen Spears and Judy Faye. |

When submitting new names, be sure to use an identifier such as friend of Karen Spears or daughter of Jessica Nelson. Also briefly tell us the reason you are requesting prayers such as recent surgery so people will know what to pray for. If you see names on the list that it is time to remove, your own, or an old submission please let Judy know. With the exception of the Long Term Category, Council has recommended that names will be placed on the list for one month and then removed unless a new request with an update is submitted. If a name disappears that you want to stay in, just contact Judy with the reason you are requesting continuing prayer and she will add it back.
