Weekly E-pistle 03/09/2017

  St. Paul's Epistle

March 9, 2017

This Sunday, March 12
Second Sunday in Lent
During Lent we journey with all those around the world who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. In today's gospel Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be born of water and Spirit. At the font we are given a new birth as daughters and sons of God. As God made a covenant with Abraham, in baptism God promises to raise us up with Christ to new life. From worship we are sent forth to proclaim God's love for all the world.

Holy Communion -
11 AM
All are welcome to receive Communion!

Sunday's Readings:
Genesis 12:1-4a             Psalm 121           Romans 4:1-5, 13-17               John 3:1-17

Sunday's chancel flowers:   Are given to the Glory of God

Study Guide: Small congregations share strengths, struggles

Many of our congregations are struggling with the same three interrelated difficulties: a smaller pool of members, a shrinking financial base, and fixed costs from an older building that may be too big for today's ministry yet requires expensive maintenance. How is your congregation doing?

Download a study guide for "Small congregations share strengths, struggles," which appeared in Living Lutheran's January 2017 print issue.

The pdf includes five pages of study questions and a copy of the article. http://files.constantcontact.com/6d3dd2cf301/c88fab0d-ee2b-41da-a1fb-be7226bcb1cc.pdf

HAPPENING IN THE COMMUNITY

Vallejo Farmers Market
Join in fellowship with the volunteers from Holy Trinity to staff a booth at the Vallejo Farmers Market.  We are looking for volunteers from St. Paul's to help. Please sign up for a 2 hour time block to help in the booth and spread the word. See Kathy Sutin or Pr. Dawn if you have any questions or want more information.

Brown Bag Meal Ministry
Remember the hungry on street corners and elsewhere by having a Brown Bag Meal handy in your car to offer these folks. The bags are available for pick-up at church, along with envelopes to donate the $4.00 it costs to fill a bag. The donation, however, is optional. Please record your name, the date, and number of bags you take. Give generously and joyfully!

Commemorations for the Week:

Gregory the Great, Bishop of Rome, died 604
Sunday, March 12, 2017
Born into wealth and power, Gregory was for a time the chief administrator of the city of Rome. Giving this up for a life in the church, he was elected pope in 590. He influenced public worship through the establishment of a lectionary and prayers to correlate with the readings. Gregorian chant is named in his honor.

Patrick, bishop, missionary to Ireland, died 461
Friday, March 17, 2017
A native of Britain, Patrick was kidnapped by pirates at age sixteen and sold into slavery in Ireland. After a few years, he escaped, returned home, and entered the ministry. Returning to Ireland, he successfully served as a bishop and missionary there.

Commemorations for the Week:

Joseph, Guardian of Jesus
Sunday, March 19, 2017
Though the Bible tells us little about the husband of Jesus' mother Mary, we know that he was a carpenter or builder by trade. He is also shown as being devoted both to God and to Mary and Jesus. It is assumed that he died before Jesus became an adult.

Thomas Cranmer, Bishop of Canterbury, martyr, died 1556
Tuesday, March 21, 2017
Cranmer's lasting achievement is contributing to and overseeing the creation of the Book of Common Prayer, which remains (in revised form) the worship book of the Anglican Communion. He was burned at the stake under Queen Mary for his support of the Protestant Reformation.

Jonathan Edwards, teacher, missionary to American Indians, died 1758
Wednesday, March 22, 2017
A Puritan minister in Connecticut, Edwards is remembered as being a great preacher. Though his most famous sermon talks at length about hell, he was more concerned with God's love. He served both as missionary to the Housatonic people in Massachusetts, and as president of the future Princeton University.

Oscar Arnulfo Romero, Bishop of El Salvador, martyr, died 1980
Friday, March 24, 2017
Romero was deeply concerned with injustices evident toward the poor and powerless in El Salvador, and worked forthrightly against political repression. He was assassinated while presiding at the eucharist in a chapel near the cathedral in San Salvador.

Annunciation of Our Lord
Saturday, March 25, 2017
Nine months before Christmas we celebrate the annunciation, in which the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth to the Son of God. The ancient church believed that this was also the date of the world's creation and of Jesus' death on the cross.
