Weekly e-pistle 08/07/2016

  St. Paul's
   E-pistle

August 4, 2016

This Sunday, August 7th
12th Sunday after Pentecost
Jesus says, "It is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." It is God's promise from the beginning-to Abraham, to the early church, and to the "little flock" of which we are a part today in assembly. Faith, God's baptismal gift, trusts the promises of God. Have no fear.

Holy Communion - 11 AM
All are welcome to receive Communion!

Sunday's Readings:
Genesis 15:1-6      Psalm 33:12-22      Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16      Luke 12:32-40

Sunday's chancel flowers: are given to the glory of God by the Domingo and Croinex families in memory of Mary B. Cook.

Lutheran World Relief - School Kits
Imagine having to choose between a meal or purchasing a notebook. Project Promise School Kits are sent to places where even the few required school supplies may be more than a family can afford. Pencils and paper can help write a positive future.

We are collecting items for Lutheran World Relief School Kits.  The backpacks have been ordered and now we need to fill them. If you have any questions, talk to Anita Patten. Include the following in each school kit:

Four 70 Sheet Notebooks of wide or college ruled paper, approximately
         8" X 10"; no loose leaf.
One  30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches
         on the other.
One  Pencil Sharpener
One  Pair of blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades
         work well)
Five  Unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with rubber band
One  Black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secure together with a
         rubber band
One  Box of 16 or 24 crayons

CONGREGATION WORKSHOPS
The second workshop, to discuss how the proceeds from the sale of annex 2 should be used, will be Saturday, August 13th 9 am - 11 am. and will focus on prioritizing the list of ideas developed at the first workshop to present at the Congregation Meeting.

CONGREGATION MEETING
The third Congregational Meeting will be held Sunday, August 28th after worship.  The agenda of the meeting will include Budget review and using the list of prioritized items, a vote will be taken to decide how the proceeds received from the sale of Annex 2 will be used.

HAPPENING IN THE COMMUNITY

Vallejo Farmers Market
Join in fellowship with the volunteers from Holy Trinity to staff a booth at the Vallejo Farmers Market.  We are looking for volunteers from St. Paul's to help. Please  sign up for a 2 hour time block to help in the booth and spread the word.  See Kathy Sutin or Pr. Dawn if you have any questions or want more information.

Brown Bag Meal Ministry
Remember the hungry on street corners and elsewhere by having a Brown Bag Meal handy in your car to offer these folks. The bags are available for pick-up at church, along with envelopes to donate the $4.00 it costs to fill a bag. The donation, however, is optional. Please record your name, the date, and number of bags you take. Give generously and joyfully!

Commemorations for the Week:

Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), died 1221
Monday, August 08, 2016
Dominic was a Spanish priest who saw the wealth of the clergy as a stumbling block for the church, so he formed a movement, the Order of Preachers (commonly called Dominicans) devoted to itinerant preaching and living in poverty.

Lawrence, deacon, martyr, died 258
Wednesday, August 10, 2016
As one of the seven deacons of the church at Rome, Lawrence was responsible for the church's financial matters and for the care of the poor. Asked by the emperor to gather the church's treasure, he presented a collection of orphans, lepers, and the like. The enraged emperor had him put to death.

Clare, Abbess of San Damiano, died 1253
Thursday, August 11, 2016
A contemporary of Francis of Assisi, Clare and a growing number of companions established a women's Franciscan community, called the Order of Poor Ladies, or Poor Clares. She inspired other women to pursue spiritual goals.

Florence Nightingale, died 1910; Clara Maass, died 1901; renewers of society
Saturday, August 13, 2016
Nightingale was born in England, and horrified her wealthy family by deciding to become a nurse. She led a group of nurses in ministering in the midst of the Crimean War, and worked for hospital reform. Maass, a native of New Jersey, was also a war nurse, and volunteered as a subject for research on yellow fever. She died of the disease.
