Weekly e-pistle 06/12/2016

  St. Paul's
   E-pistle

June 9, 2016

This Sunday, June 12th
4th Sunday after Pentecost
The enormity of our sin is surpassed only by the mercy of God. We come, repentant, to the table of the Lord. In the body and blood of Jesus, in the announcement of our absolution, all our sins are forgiven. "Happy are they . . . whose sin is put away." Happy are we.

Holy Communion - 11 AM
All are welcome to receive Communion!

Sunday's Readings:
2 Samuel 11:26--12:10, 13-15        Psalm 32        Galatians 2:15-21      Luke 7:36--8:3

Sunday's chancel flowers: are given to the glory of God by Kathy Sutin in Celebration of her Birthday on June 11th.   HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATHY!!

SPECIAL CONGREGATION MEETING - SUNDAY JUNE 19TH
There will be a special congregation meeting following the worship service on Sunday June 19th.  This meeting is being held at the request of the Building Committee to share their findings and recommendations regarding the two annex buildings. Please plan to attend to hear the committees recommendations and be part of the decisions that move us forward. See the bulletin board in the fellowship hallway or a committee member if you'd like more information.

New Council Members
The Church Council is happy to announce the addition of their two newest members Keith Domingo and Corie Hervey.
Please take a moment to congratulate and thank Keith and Corie for volunteering their time and service to our council.

29th Annual Synod Assembly - June 3 - 5, 2016 -  Reno
"We Are Church Together"
Bishop Mark Holmerud led the Assembly and ELCA Presiding Bishop, The Rev. Elizabeth Eaton attended as the ELCA Churchwide Representative and keynote speaker.  547 individuals attended the Assembly, 432 were voting members. Of the voting members, 272 or 63% were lay and 160 or 37% were clergy.
Business of the Assembly included Elections for Synod Council Positions and Synod Secretary. The Assembly voted on Resolutions and adapted a 2016-17 budget.  The Assembly also approved changes to the Synod Constitution S9.04.  You can read the complete report on the Sierra Pacific Synod website at: Find us on Google+

At the synod assembly the Bishop asked several clergy and their representative members to come up front. Pr. Dawn and the representative member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity were invited to come up.

Pr. Stephen Carlson of the Valley Mission Coalition presented 9 churches with a $5000 ministry grant for outreach and engagement in their communities. The congregations are:
Immanuel Lutheran Church, Alameda
St Paul Lutheran Family, Carson City
Hope Lutheran Church, El Sobrante
Advent Lutheran Church, Morgan Hill
Trinity Lutheran Church, Porterville
Lutheran Church of Our Savior, San Francisco
Pella Lutheran Church, Selma
St Paul's Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran Churches, Vallejo
Community Lutheran Church, Watsonville

This is exciting news for us and we need to get our two congregations together soon to decide what to do this money in our community! Recipients of the grants will tell their stories of how the money was put to use at the 2017 Synod Assembly.

Summer Lunch Program
Sadly, we have been notified by the Director of the Summer Lunch Program that St. Paul's Lutheran Church will not be a host site for lunch distribution this year.  Due to low participation it is not cost effective for the program to deliver to our site.  Thank you to all who have given your time and support to this program over the years.

Brown Bag Meal Ministry
Remember the hungry on street corners and elsewhere by having a Brown Bag Meal handy in your car to offer these folks. The bags are available for pick-up at church, along with envelopes to donate the $4.00 it costs to fill a bag. The donation, however, is optional. Please record your name, the date, and number of bags you take. Give generously and joyfully!

Commemorations for the Week

Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea, died 379; Gregory, Bishop of Nyssa, died around 385; Gregory of Nazianzus, Bishop of Constantinople, died around 389; Macrina, theologian, died around 379
Tuesday, June 14, 2016
The Cappadocian fathers, as the three men in this group are known, explored the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Basil's monastic rule forms the basis for Eastern monastic life. Gregory of Nazianzus defended orthodox Christianity in Constantinople. Gregory of Nyssa, Basil's younger brother, wrote on the spiritual life. Macrina, older sister of Basil and Gregory of Nyssa, was the leader of a community dedicated to asceticism, meditation, and prayer.
