Weekly e-pistle 02/05/2016

    St.  Paul's
      E-pistle
February 5, 2016

This Sunday, February 7
Transfiguration of Our Lord
Last Sunday after Epiphany

Holy Communion - 10 AM
All are welcome to receive Communion!
Witnesses to the glory of God in the face of Jesus will be unable to avoid reflecting that glory in the world. It was true for Moses. It was doubtless true for Peter, James, and John. We pray that it will be true of all of us who see the glory of the Lord in the word and in the supper and who are being "transformed into the same image" by the Spirit of God.

Sunday's Readings:
Exodus 34:29-35        Psalm 99        2Corinthians 3:12--4:2       Luke 9:28-36 [37-43a]

Sunday's chancel flowers: are given to the glory of God

Happening Around St. Paul's

This Sunday, February 7th:
"Fat Sunday" (Dimanche Gras? Shrove Sunday?)
For centuries, people have prepared for Lent by using up fatty and sweet foods that were not to be eaten again until Easter. Since Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, the day before Lent is known as "Fat Tuesday" (Mardi Gras in French). It is also known as "Shrove Tuesday," because it has been traditional for the faithful to make individual confession in preparation for the season (after the partying was over, of course!), and thus to be shriven of their sins. Tuesday night is not an especially convenient time for a party, however. This year, we will celebrate Fat Sunday rather than Fat Tuesday, and we've invited the people of Holy Trinity to join us. Put on your beads, and come enjoy food, fellowship and festivities immediately after worship!

Wednesday, February 10th:
Ash Wednesday Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes
Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity will host this year's Ash Wednesday observance. We'll celebrate a traditional Ash Wednesday eucharist to mark the beginning of Lent's
baptismal preparation for Easter. Each year, on Ash Wednesday, the people of God
receive ashen crosses on their foreheads (a gesture rooted in baptism), hear the solemn proclamation to keep a fast in preparation for Easter's feast, and contemplate anew the ongoing meaning of baptismal initiation into Christ's death and resurrection. While marked with the ashes of human mortality, the church hears God's promise of forgiveness and tastes God's   compassion in the bread of life and the cup of salvation. From this solemn liturgy, the church begins its journey to the great baptismal feast of Easter.

When:  Wednesday, February 10th - 7 p.m.
Where: Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 201 Doyle Drive, Vallejo

Sunday February 14th:  Souper Bowl Sunday
Sunday February 14th we will be collecting money for the newly re-opened Vallejo Christian Help Center.  The Vallejo Chriatian Help Center provides food and shelter to those in our community who are homeless and in need of care with compassion, dignity and respect.  A collection box will be in the back of the nave.  See Vicki Pyle for additional information.
