This Sunday, May 17th

Seventh Sunday of Easter

Holy Communion - 10 AM - All are welcome to receive Communion!

The gospel for Easter's seventh Sunday is always taken from the long prayer Jesus prays for his followers in John's gospel on the night before his death, and always includes Jesus' desire that his followers will be one as he and the Father are one. This oneness is not mere doctrinal agreement or institutional unity, but mutual abiding, interpenetrating life, mutual love and joy. This oneness is the work of the Spirit whom we have received but also await. Come, Holy Spirit!

Sunday's readings:

Acts 1:15-17, 21-26, Psalm 1, 1 John 5:9-13, John 17:6-19

Other Happenings:

Spring Congregation Meeting This Sunday, May 17th, immediately following worship:

At our spring meeting, we will elect council members and a call committee. Please pray about how God may be calling you to serve during this time of transition. We will also correct a typo in the bylaws.

May 24th is The Day of Pentecost! Wear red!

Cookies Needed for Synod Assembly: Each congregation is asked to provide several dozen nutritious cookies for the synod assembly's hospitality room. Please put your cookies in containers you will not need back, and leave them in the kitchen by Thursday, May 28th. Pr. Pamela and Craig Pyle will attend this year's synod assembly as voting members. Dave Pond and Vicki Pyle will accompany them as visitors.

Finance Workshops: Mark your calendars and plan to participate! In order to create a budget that best reflects the mission and values of the congregation, the finance team will lead a series of short workshops after worship on May 24th, May 31st, June 7th and June 14th. No decisions will be made at these workshops; rather, the finance team will gather information through these short workshops. We value your participation. Please come!

Sunday's chancel flowers are given to the glory of God by John Patten for Anita's Birthday.

Judy Faye is in the process of cleaning shelves and cabinets to create storage for our vibrant seeing ministry. The books and VHS tapes on the table in our community room will be there for the taking for the next two weeks. Archival copies of past hymnals and useful educational materials have been set aside to go in Saint Paul's library. After two weeks, all remaining materials will be redistributed or recycled.

A Message from Bev Smith on Behalf of the Worship Committee
Please read!

In an attempt to have communion before 11:00 a.m., the worship committee is "experimenting" with a few changes in the worship service. It is understandable that kids can only sit still so long, and we hope to shorten the service so those who have to leave will be able to receive communion. We are requesting your help with the following changes:
  • As of last Sunday, May 10th, we have moved the announcements to the end of the service, before the blessing. In order to make announcements that all can hear, we ask that, if you have an announcement to make, you please sit in the front pew after receiving communion. This will have you up front, where your voice will be easier to be heard, and we will not have to wait for you to walk to the front.
  • We also are experimenting with shortening the time it takes for the Sharing of the Peace. For a few Sundays, let's try just saying "Peace Be With You," a short hug if you want, and move on to the next person. There have been conversations that span over several minutes, and when that happens with each person you share the peace with, the aisle is blocked and the Sharing of the Peace can take 10 minutes or more. Those longer conversations can be held downstairs during coffee hour.
In addition, the Creed is included only on baptismal festivals, or when new members are received. The creed was a late addition to the liturgy, and the credal elements are included in the Great Thanksgiving. The Creed is not a required element of the liturgy.

At its next meeting, the worship committee will discuss how these changes are working out.

Thank you for your cooperation.
